The Masai Mara is in southwest Kenya, on the border with Tanzania. It is one of the most popular safari destinations in Africa — and for good reason Every year, from July until October, around 1.5 million wildebeest cross the crocodile-filled Mara and Talek rivers as they follow the rains in and out of Kenya. One of their Talek crossing points is just 150 metres from Rekero’s dining area, and the Mara River is only a short drive from camp.
Wildebeest Migration
Witnessing a river crossing is like watching a live National Geographic film. Huge herds of wildebeest thunder across the river, plunging from the banks into the water. Crocodile lie in wait. Billowing dust, thudding hooves and a chorus of grunts fill the air as the animals cross in one of the most dramatic migration events in Africa. At Rekero, you don’t even need to leave camp to watch the action unfold.
Outside of migration season, one of the highlights of staying in the Masai Mara is viewing the predators that prowl these plains. It’s no coincidence that many wildlife documentaries, including BBC’s Big Cat Diary and Disney’s African Cats, have been filmed here. There is a high concentration of lions — including our resident Rekero pride — plus cheetahs and leopards.

Nine classic, spacious safari tents are set among the trees overlooking the Talek River. Each tent has an en suite bathroom with a flushing toilet and hot-water shower. Chill out on a daybed on your private veranda for a midday snooze or to watch zebras ambling along the riverban

Meals and refreshments
Meals are usually enjoyed communally. The Camp chefs are up at dawn busily preparing everything from scratch. For breakfast, the camp offer either a light continental buffet spread or a full English fry-up, as well as fresh fruit and juices. At lunch, salads and veggies are served with a main course. If you prefer to stay out in the bush, the camp can pack a picnic. At 4pm, cake and tea or a refreshing iced coffee before your evening drive. We’ll see you later for a three-course dinner.
Rekero Camp can cater to most dietary requirements and allergies. Please just let us know ahead of your arrival.
Activities
Over a leisurely lunch on the deck, with the scent of wild sage in the air, you may hear hippo grunting in the Talek River below and see herds of wildebeest gathering on the banks, readying themselves to cross the water. The team at Rekero have worked here for many years and provide exceptional service, while our Maasai guides share their detailed knowledge of their homeland and the animals with which they share it.
Game drives
Wildlife viewing is the main event at Rekero, with two game drives per day, led by expert local guides. Whether you’re fascinated by predators or a keen birder, experiences can be tailored to suit your interests. Our game-viewing vehicles are open to allow for unobscured sightings and photographs. And don’t worry if your devices are running low on power. Our safari vehicles are fitted with charging points for easy charging and fridges to keep drinks cold.
Big-cat conservation
The Masai Mara is famous for its big cats, and Kenya takes wildlife protection seriously. Asilia can arrange for a researcher from Kenya Wildlife Trust to present a talk in camp about their work with local communities and how they protect animals such as lions, cheetahs and leopards. Alternatively, guests can book a visit to the Kenya Wildlife Trust and Maa Trust research units to learn more. Advance bookings are essential.
Hot-air balloon rides
There are few sights more breathtaking than that of the wildlife-rich Mara plains from the air. Start the day with a sunrise hot-air balloon flight for a bird’s-eye view of this awe-inspiring landscape. Hot-air balloon rides are subject to weather conditions and at an additional cost.
Family Safaris
There are two family tents at Rekero, each with two separate bedrooms, sleeping up to five people per tent. The minimum age for children is 5, but we may be able to accommodate younger children, depending on camp occupancy. We have no specific children’s programme at Rekero, but love welcoming families and will try to adapt activities as much as possible. Please talk to your agent about private vehicle options.
A Typical day on Safari at Rekero Camp
The best time to see wildlife is at dusk and dawn, when the temperatures are cooler and nocturnal animals are either beginning their night’s activities or winding down.
Generally, you’ll start the day bright and early with a wake-up call and tea or coffee. Enjoy breakfast before you depart for your morning game drive(or have it packed as a picnic to take with you). We head out on our first game drive just as it begins to get light, so time differs slightly depending on the season. If you have booked a private safari vehicle, you can plan a schedule with your guide. Arrive back in camp mid-morning, with a chance to freshen up before lunch.Â
After a leisurely lunch, enjoy siesta. Read a book or just relax and enjoy the views from your tent or one of our viewing decks. Refuel with afternoon tea before we depart for your evening game drive with sundowners. You’ll be back in time for drinks around the campfire and dinner — the perfect chance to unwind after a long day in the bush.

Child rates
- Children below 5 years are not allowed unless the camp is booked exclusively
- Child 5-18: 50 % of adult rate
- Children below 12 should always share a room with an adult
- Child 19 years and older :-full adult rate
- If 1 adult sharing with 2 children, the adult pays the per person sharing rate and each child pays 50% of the adult rate.
